The Flash

“Faster than a Speeding Bullet.”
— One of Superman’s Superpowers

Super Speed has two aspects when it comes to Web Design:

  1. Staying up-to-date with technology and trends
  2. Dealing with the infamous “I Need It Yesterday Conundrum”

Technical Super Speed

Technology and design trends move at the speed of light. Web Design Superheroes need super speed to stay ahead of the crush of new developments in HTML, CSS, server-side scripting, DOM scripting and a thousand other technologies that make up the current — and future — web development landscape.

A Web Design Superhero has to keep moving to stay up-to-date on the latest tools of the trade. Since it’s unlikely that a lightning strike in a lab full of chemicals will grant you the powers of the Speed Force (The Flash), it’s fortunate that the web is a wealth of resources to keep pace with the increasing speed of change.

Some of the resources that keep me moving faster than a speeding bullet are CSS Tricks, NetTUTS, A List Apart, Cameron Moll Fuel Your Coding and Think Vitamin (to name just a few).

Customer Service Super Speed

Most clients understand that designing and building websites isn’t something that is done with the push of a button and requires as much planning as any other complex, multistage project. HAHAHAHA! Yeah, I’m kidding.

Usually when asked, “What is your deadline?” most clients answer — with a totally straight face — “Yesterday”. Now normally this is where the Web Design Superhero uses his Mind Control superpower (more on this power later) to convince the client that yesterday is not a reasonable deadline. However, there are times when a client really does need the job done immediately to meet unexpected deadlines and Web Design superheroes set themselves apart from mere mortals by being flexible and responsive. Using Super Speed can disorder an otherwise orderly life — yeah, we all have those — but pays HUGE dividends for your business when word gets around that you are a miracle worker.
