Box Art Throwback

Pac-Man – Atari 400/800

Atari’s 1982 port of Pac-Man for the Atari VCS (aka the 2600) was one of the games responsible for the Video Game Crash of 1983. It was (rightfully) greeted by groans from reviewers and fans alike. However, if you were lucky enough to own the Atari 400/800 home computer, you were treated to a much better version of the game.

But, if you were really, really lucky you got the Atari 400/800 Pac-Man with box art from the fever dream of a madman. I could not find the artist’s name, but this guy (or girl) took the concept of Pac-Man to unexpected heights.

Pac-Man Atari 400/600 Cart BoxThe box portrays Pac-Man as a giant-headed, bucktooth jogger running from Blinky through a maze that looks like the forerunner of World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros while eating air hockey pucks.

The more common version of the box is a touched up version of the original Atari 2600 Pac-Man box. It’s nicely done, but can’t match the “Jogging Man” version for sheer originality.
